Chamonix

Chamonix gives access to not one mountain, but three, at least. Opting for the Mont Blanc Unlimited lift pass rather than the more limited Le Pass also covers the resort's fourth area, Les Houches, plus the challenging upper section of Argentiere area and the Aiguille du Midi lift from the centre of town to the shoulder of Mont Blanc. What's more Megève in France and Courmayeur in Italy are also covered.

The two-stage cable car from Chamonix to Plan de l’Aiguille (2,170m) and Aiguille du Midi (3,842m) is an engineering marvel and sightseeing highlight in itself. The famous Vallée Blanche run (an unmarked, unmaintained, unpatrolled off-piste itinerary route) runs from here back down through the glaciers to Chamonix, and delivers some of the most spectacular scenery the Mont Blanc range has to offer.

Les Houches has long runs through the woods of a kind more often associated with Austria, including Kandahar – Chamonix’s World Cup downhill race course.

Morzine / Avoriaz

As well as being a ski resort, Morzine is a proper little Alpine town that has a year-round life stretching far beyond having fun on the mountains that surround it.

Morzine is the capital of the huge 600km cross-border Portes du Soleil ski area that extends into Switzerland. It’s a great base and is ideally suited to families, but it does have one disadvantage – low altitude.

Avoriaz is a purpose-built resort perched on a sloping shelf above a dramatic high cliff a few km from lower, long-established Morzine.

It is entirely free of wheeled traffic; cars are left in paid-for parks at the edge of the village.

Courmayeur

This lovely old village at the foot of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc, has a relatively small ski area, but compensating factors include challenging off piste, superb restaurants and lively nightlife.

The village is located just beneath the entrance to the Mont Blanc tunnel on the Italian side of the world-famous mountain. Like Chamonix, just 22km away through the tunnel on the French side of Mont Blanc, stylish Courmayeur is also one of the great snow sports and climbing communities of the Alps.

Courmayeur's main ski area spreads out from a mid-mountain base at Plan Chécrouit, reached by cable car from the centre of town. With a top lift at 2,755m and the bottom of the slopes at 1,224m, the vertical here is pretty impressive, however there are limited pistes – 41km.

Courchevel

Ski resort of Courchevel is the place to be seen, with a fantastic selection of pistes, lift access, shops, restaurants and accommodation. It is also part of the 3 Valleys making it one of the largest ski areas in the world. You have the choice of 4 different areas to stay: Courchevel Le Praz, Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1650 and Courchevel 1850. As part of the 3 Valleys this is a great place to base yourself allowing you to ski the whole area.

Courchevel is one of the most sort after French alpine ski resorts in the world. Firstly for its great skiing including access to 180 lifts and 150KM of pistes (including La Tania) but it also has over 10 Michelin stars to its name, an array of luxury shops and a wealth of 5 star accommodation. Courchevel is the skiing playground for the rich, royals and famous but don't be put off if you can't fly to the Courchevel Altiport (airport) in a luxury jet, Courchevel caters for all and Whiterides airport transfers can easily transfer you from any of the larger more popular airports including Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble and Chambery.

Meribel

Méribel ski resort is a very picturesque and pretty resort with tree lined pistes and a beautiful central village to explore. You have the choice of 5 different areas to stay: Méribel Les Allues, Méribel Village, Méribel Centre, Méribel Les Hauts and Méribel Mottaret. As part of The 3 Valleys this is a great place to base yourself, allowing you to ski and snowboard the whole area.

Méribel starts at 1450m and reaches a top elevation of 2952m offering access to 76 pistes and 56 lifts just around Méribel.

Val-Thorens

Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe, the resort sits at 2300m. Val Thorens was named ‘Best French Ski Resort’ by the world travel awards in 2013 and 2014. Its highest skiable piste sits at 3230m and the resort itself has 29 lifts, 68 skiable pistes covering 150km.

Neighbouring resort Les Menuires has 33 lifts, 76 ski slopes and covers 160km of skiable pistes.

Val Thorens and Les Menuires are part of the ‘3 Vallees’ which offers up to 200 lifts, 318 skiable pistes and provides a huge 600km of skiable terrain! Making Les 3 Vallees one of the largest linked ski areas in the world along with neighbouring ‘Paradiski’.

Val D'Isere

Val d'Isère ski resort covers a huge area – covering the villages of Val d'Isère 1850, which is the epi centre, Portillo, Le Crêt, Funival and La Daille 1785 to the north-west, Le Fornet, Le Laisinant, Les Richardes to the east, plus Joseray, Le Chatelard and La Legettaz to the south.

There are free shuttle buses between the villages of Val d'Isère, going west to east via ‘the village’ (Val d'Isère), or north-south.

Val d'Isère is well linked to Tignes ski resort and is part of the Espace Killy ski area. With 300km of pistes and 94 lifts, what more could you need on your ski holiday?

Tignes

The Tignes ski resort has been open since the 3rd of October 2015.

There are 3680 hectares of skiable terrain, which includes:

• 480 hectares of marked ski runs that are patrolled and made safe
• 3200 hectares of off-piste skiing where you can make some fresh tracks
• 300kms of ski runs suitable for all levels, from beginner to expert
• Maximum altitude is at the top of the Grande Motte cable car, at 3456m
• Minimum altitude: 1550m, which is the village of Tignes les Brévières
• 78 ski lifts

Les Arcs

The French ski resort Les Arcs is a great ski resort for everyone. Offering wide open pistes, as well as fantastic tree lined forest runs, for all to explore on both skis and snowboards. You have the choice of Les Arcs 2000, Les Arcs 1950, Les Arcs 1800, Les Arcs 1600 and Peisey-Vallandry, which is home to the famous Vanoise Express cable car.

The Vanoise Express lift links the resorts of Les Arcs and La Plagne together to form the Paradiski, one of the biggest ski areas in the world.

Les Arcs is a beautiful resort to ski around, with access to all the different areas of Peisey-Vallandry. Reaching 3225 metres at the top of the Aiguille Rouge via 2 cable cars.

From the top of the Aiguille Rouge it is possible to ski a full 7kms, with over 2000 metres in vertical drop. Leading you all the way down to the quaint village of Villaroger.
